We have witnessed protests over our racist judicial system, unchecked police power, and the persistent devaluation of Black American's lives. We have been here before far too many times. Too many times due to too little action by ourselves and our elected officials. Something must change. Citizens shouldn't fear the police. The police must remember they are PEACE OFFICERS who serve the community, not warriors who conquer it! I support extensive reform actions for police departments across the US
Focusing on reviewing policy over policing is vital. One facet of that is the use of teargas. Not only should Lakewood make it illegal to use or for police to posses, but they should condemn Cleveland’s use of teargas on protestors. Teargas is considered illegal in warfare — yet it’s perfectly legal to use on peaceful protestors in our own country. It has created bleeding for women not on their menstrual cycle, as well as caused harm to fetuses. It’s unacceptable to continue to allow it’s use.
I support policing and public safety reforms to ensure racial justice and equitable treatment under the law for all citizens. Existing policies should be reviewed and updated as necessary to align with the "8 Can't Wait" recommendations as a starting point. I urge the Councilmembers to go further and investigate other public safety models such as the CAHOOTS program in Eugene, Oregon for emergency and non-emergency calls where armed officers are not required.
Please see my attached suggestions for consideration. Thank you for working to address this issue.
