The Curtis Block could be put to excellent use for the betterment of this community and I'd like to express support for maintaining its historical preservation. A major reason my wife and I are choosing to raise our family in Lakewood is the uniqueness of the city which we don't want to see lost to new development. I hope the city is invested in protecting buildings like this that make Lakewood special.

The preservation of the Curtis Block will help maintain the fabric of Downtown Lakewood. As the last of the four corners left, it can serve as the guide to the look and feel of future development. It is human in scale which is an important element for our city.

Please consider investing in the history of our downtown by stabilizing the Curtis Block building. It is an important structure that adds to the character and depth of our unique Detroit Road business district. Once a building is gone there is no going back. Please save this structure for us and future generations. It’s not the same to read a plaque that says “Historical Curtis Block Building Once Stood Here”

We are pleased that City Council and the Administration recognize the importance of saving the Curtis Block and returning this architecturally and historically important downtown Lakewood building to productive use. The community support for this building is extensive. The immediate repair issues need to be addressed now, as well as a plan to rehabilitate the building.

I urge Council to act to preserve the Curtis Block. It is both architecturally and historically significant, and forms an important anchor to the downtown district. The last two owners have not been good stewards of the property, and the lack of the most basic maintenance has brought it to its current condition. I believe it is the City's responsibility as the current owner to stabilize the building immediately while its future use is being determined.
