27. Communication from Councilmembers Rader & Kepple regarding recent attacks on abortion access from federal, state, and local entities. (to be provided)
Thank you for taking a stand in support of a person's right to choose if and when to bear children, and whether an abortion is necessary. This important, life-changing and in many cases, life-saving decision can only be made by the person whose body would be carrying a pregnancy.
Some feel using precedent from Roe vs. Wade, is not strong Constitutional evidence to support pro-choice legislation. It is also believed that referencing the 14th Amendment, as a woman’s right to privacy in deciding if she wants to continue with her pregnancy, is also a far Constitutional reach.
Many believe life begins at conception, and once life is recognized and their parents are U.S. citizens, that HUMAN baby is afforded his or her rights under the 4th Amendment:
“…nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws”.
Who is speaking for the child in the womb? Who needs the most protection? Is it not those who cannot speak for or protect themselves like a baby in the womb of their Mother?
There has been no ruling on the current federal case as of today. Regardless of the ruling, states and municipalities still have their own courts and judicial system. It would be very unlikely for the federal Supreme Court to make a blanket ruling for all 50 states, so how about allowing cooperative federalism to work.
How about we as Lakewood citizens work on some of the cultural issues related to challenged pregnancies, vs being more concerned about abortion.
Regarding pregnancies from sexual assaults, there is no argument here if a woman decides to terminate. The psychological damage alone is horrific.
What many want to prevent is the slow creep of abortion procedures inching into the realm of “late term”. It is a difficult position for all involved, and being an advocate for the unborn comes with nothing but Love in our hearts.
