I neither support nor oppose this resolution as I believe most people are already very aware of poverty. Instead of this resolution I would like to see actual economic policies that address poverty in the city. I do not believe it is a city government’s job to raise awareness, it should work to fix the issue
While I have grown up in a family that hasn't been in much financial hardship, I can appreciate the efforts of the city council to recognize the hardships that many Americans face.
However, being aware of an issue is only the start and not where the work ends. If the council is committed to addressing the issue of poverty here in Lakewood, then I am excited to see the upcoming collaborations with local organizations to assist those in need.
Hunger and malnutrition, homelessness, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion, and restricted access to participation in the democratic process are just some of the many manifestations of poverty. I support this resolution to bring greater awareness to the work needed to help develop and pass policies that are rooted in equity, advocate inclusion, and give all people, regardless of race, color, sex, national origin, or economic status, equitable access to a life free of fear of hunger, of discrimination, of racism, of an unequal education, or lack of shelter. As a community, there is more we can, and should, do to advocate for a life rooted in the shared equity of dignity amongst all human beings.
