12. RESOLUTION 2025-15 - A RESOLUTION to take effect immediately provided it receives the vote of at least two thirds of the members of Council, or otherwise to take effect at the earliest period allowed by law to achieve continued improvement of Lakewood traffic safety efforts for all road users.
We must continue making ALL STREETS safe for everyone. I have a big problem with how narrow all the streets in Lakewood are because no one can be bothered to park in their driveways. The Bunta road project is critical artery for school traffic and I would think one would welcome an improvement that makes things safer for alternative modes of transportation. I think there are even more things that could be done but hoping to become more involved in these efforts. Safer Streets for All!!
Safe streets for all equals a safe Lakewood for all. Please continue the hard work and focus toward accomplishing this through commitment to the ATP, Bunts Road rehab project, the Lakewood-Clifton connector project, the intersection at Hilliard and Madison, and the other dangerous intersections known in the city. We all deserve a safe route home and through our vibrant, diverse, and welcoming city regardless of the mode of transportation we use. I can’t wait to see more meaningful changes to our infrastructure that stay true to Lakewood and its community.
As the most cycling and pedestrian friendly city in Ohio, we owe it to our community to provide infrastructure worthy of these titles. The projects that the city has outlined in this resolution, projects on Bunts Rd, and others are vital to ensuring we maintain this title and provide the vibrant, inclusive community that we were all drawn to in moving here. Please continue to prioritize these issues and expand them to our busiest corridors to enable our residents and visitors to travel safely throughout our beautiful city.
Thank you for prioritizing infrastructure that supports alternative modes of transportation. I strongly support the Bunts Road multi-use path and commend the city for taking a holistic approach to road safety, recognizing that not everyone relies on a motor vehicle for every trip. This project is a step in the right direction, and I encourage continued efforts like this to create safer streets for everyone. It's unfortunate that some opposition appears to be rooted in misinformation and have went so far as passing out pamphlet with this misinformation, but I believe the benefits of the Bunts Road project will be clear for all. Keep up the great work!
Lakewood homeowner and bike-riding mom here to voice strong support for the Bunts Road Project! Thank you to City Council and the administration for prioritizing safe, inclusive infrastructure—this kind of investment is exactly what we need. After a pedestrian was killed near my home, I started thinking more seriously about the future my 2-year-old will grow up in. I want her to be able to walk or bike to a friend’s house safely one day—not just with awareness training, but because the streets are actually designed to protect her. I love the focus on real infrastructure changes that make active transportation safer and more appealing for everyone in Lakewood.
Building infrastructure for alternative modes of transportation helps everyone and makes our streets safer for everyone. Huge supporter of the bunts road project. Thank you for your efforts and please continue to prioritize and implement projects like this.
I commend the city for taking a wholistic approach to road safety by acknowledging that not everyone can or wants to make every trip in a motor vehicle. Also, as a parent to a child currently in sixth grade and another in 3rd, I am looking forward to the Bunts multi-use path and the positive impact it will have on my kids' ability to travel to their high school.
I oppose the shared path on Bunts. As a resident, I already have semi trucks, emergency vehicles, large construction vehicles, and regular traffic flying past my house. Losing part of the tree lawn in the east side will bring the traffic even closer to my property. The loss of trees will be highly negative to the overall health and neighborhood feel of the street.
Please comment as to how many council members live on Bunts and will be personally affected by this decision. Will your neighborhood have a multi use path going through it?
I am opposed to the shared-use path on Bunts Road. As a resident of Bunts, it's tough enough to get out of the driveway with all the traffic. Adding a shared-use path will increase the foot traffic and increase the danger to pedestrians.
Shifting the multi-purpose path proposed on Bunts Road to the roadway.
As a Bunts Road homeowner, I encourage you to abandon the proposed multi-use path on Bunts Road for the following reasons:
1. Tearing up a perfectly good concrete sidewalk to replace it with an asphalt path is a waste of money
2. Expanding a 5-foot wide sidewalk to be a 10-foot wide path will impact the root zones on the tree lawns causing the destruction of the existing tree canopy. Those trees are critical to cleaning the air, providing shade and soaking up excess storm water. I understand the sewer work may impact some of the larger trees with roots expanding to the curb. But most of our Bunts trees are mid-sized and would survive such sewer work. It would be criminal to destroy them all and start over with newly planted saplings that will take decades to start providing the benefits we currently get from the existing trees. Urban forestry tree calculators show that our trees that cost $200 to $300 to plant in the last few decades are now worth several thousands of dollars each in benefits to our community. Please don't needlessly destroy these valuable Lakewood assets.
3. Lakewood has made an effort recently to add bike lanes to streets, even busy ones like Lake, Madison and Hilliard. It makes no sense to abandon this model on just one street instead of maintaining a consistent bike plan throughout the city.
4. Mixing E-bikes and motorized scooters on the same path as our dog walkers, strollers and other pedestrians is an accident waiting to happen.
