I oppose the multimodal path on Bunts. I was recently in multiple countries in Europe. All had bike lanes but NONE mixed pedestrians & bikes. All lanes we saw were not in residential areas & were not intersected by many streets/driveways. Too dangerous! Further, where there weren’t bike lanes, bikes had to ride with vehicle traffic and mind all traffic laws. Cyclists largely don’t mind traffic laws in Lakewood now. Giving them more space where they will feel further entitled to do what they want is irresponsible. Bike lanes are good when done correctly and laws are enforced. As it stands, the city is putting too much pressure on our safety forces with this ill-fated plan. Properly vet this plan for safety. There are best practices in place in other countries. Take the time to consider the best approach for Lakewood. Work FOR your constituents, not against us. Council, Don’t let the mayor railroad you like she is railroading Bunts residents.
I'm in support of the complete streets ordinance and every infrastructure change that makes safe for everyone outside of car because as it stands right now without the proper infrastructure we are forced to ride along side multi ton death machines that are being operated by individuals who are easily distracted, do not care, or are straight up incompetent.
Information campaigns do not help as there are drivers who are too busy to look it up, it doesn't reach them, or they flat out give 2 cents about anyone. The only way to have drivers behave is to make the environment force them to be safe, you can only do that with proper infrastructure:
Bollards, bump out, narrow roads, continuous sidewalks, bus only lanes, tram lines, pedestrian priority traffic lights, and separated protected bike lanes.
For the all year active transportation users in this city specifically multi model paths are the best option since sidewalks are not plowed during the winter. Keeping sidewalks on certain roads will hinder everyone outside of a car during the winter as it no one can get anywhere when their whole route is buried in snow and ice. Multi use paths actually get plowed so people can actually move.
Not everyone wants to use a car nor can everyone afford a car; why should we neglect such people? They pay taxes and contribute to the city too, we shouldn't be ignored just because we don't travel on 4 wheels.
Opposition to Proposed Multimodal Path on Bunts Road
I am writing to voice strong opposition to the proposed multimodal path on Bunts Road, an opinion shared by the vast majority of residents, as evidenced by the many signs displayed throughout our neighborhood and over 1300 plus residents that have signed a petition, This project does not reflect the will of the community. As our elected representatives, your responsibility is to uphold the interests of your constituents, not those of a narrowly focused advocacy group.
Bunts Road is simply not a safe or suitable location for a multimodal path. It is a narrow, heavily traveled emergency corridor with limited visibility and frequent driveway crossings. Introducing a shared pedestrian and bicycle path into this already constrained space poses SERIOUS safety risks and is not a responsible choice.
Environmentally, the project is deeply FLAWED. Replacing established green space with impervious asphalt will increase stormwater runoff, contribute to urban heat island effects, and eliminate vital tree canopy. These changes directly undermine sustainability goals and represent a harmful STEP BACKWARDS in addressing climate challenges.
Equally concerning is the lack of a transparent planning process. There has been no meaningful data collection or thorough analysis of the project's impact. Residents were excluded from early discussions, and from the very beginning, key details, such as the inclusion of a 10-foot-wide multimodal path were omitted from the ONE and ONLY notification on May 7th about this project.
Cyclists are already permitted on sidewalks and ride safely today, making it an unnecessary and wasteful use of public funds.
This project is opposed by residents, lacks justification, and provides no clear benefit to the community it would disrupt. I urge you to listen to those who live here and reject this flawed and unpopular proposal, which stands to cause more harm than good.
