6. RESOLUTION 2025-49 – A RESOLUTION to join with states, municipalities, and other jurisdictions around the country to designate September 15 – October 15, 2025 as Hispanic Heritage Month in the City of Lakewood, Ohio by celebrating Hispanic culture and paying tribute to the contributions of Hispanic Americans.

Right now, Latino communities face intensified threats: ICE raids that separate families, violence fueled by anti-immigrant sentiment, and dehumanizing public rhetoric. These actions don’t happen in a vacuum. They create fear here at home and discourage many from engaging in civic life.

This resolution matters more precisely because of that context. It recognizes the long history and growing presence of Hispanic and Latino residents. It honors their contributions in culture, business, public life. It also stands explicitly against policies and rhetoric that target, scapegoat, or harm Latino communities.

By passing this, Lakewood can affirm: our city rejects fear and exclusion. We commit to protect all residents, regardless of background. We encourage respect, safety, and participation.

I urge Council to vote yes. And to follow through with programs and partnerships that make these commitments real.
