This needs to be done yesterday. I don't know what else there is to say. Accelerate this study and the changes that will result from it.

I strongly support the Madison Avenue/Hilliard Boulevard safety analysis and urge the City to implement the recommended improvements as quickly as possible.
As a community member who uses this intersection, I appreciate the thorough, data-driven approach taken in this study. The proposed safety measures—particularly curb bump-outs, leading pedestrian intervals (LPIs), and protected-only left turns—address critical safety concerns that affect pedestrians, cyclists, and all road users daily.
I join other residents in emphasizing that many of these improvements are low-cost or no-cost and can be implemented immediately. LPIs, for example, are noted in the analysis as an easy and effective update. Curb bump-outs would shorten crossing distances and improve visibility, while protected-only left turns would reduce dangerous conflicts. Any minor delays to vehicle traffic are absolutely worth the enhanced safety for our community members.
I also support extending bike lane delineation along Madison to match what currently exists on Hilliard, providing consistent safety benefits for both motorists and cyclists.
These evidence-based safety treatments prioritize people and represent exactly the kind of forward-thinking infrastructure our city needs. I encourage the City to move forward with these recommendations promptly and to continue studying other problematic intersections throughout Lakewood.
Thank you for your commitment to this important work.

Thank you for taking the time to conduct this life-saving research. Now that you as city leaders, residents, and employees have this vital information, I urge you to make additional changes to this intersection as soon as humanly possible. There are some outlined changes recommended here that are no cost and many that are low cost that can be implemented right away to help keep our community members and visitors safer when traveling through it. I highly support the bump outs, traffic signal upgrades (such as implementation of LPIs noted in the analysis as “an easy and effective update“), and other recommendations outlined in this report. Vehicles (including bikes) experiencing a less than 30 seconds additional delay during peak hours from some of these improvements at this intersection is 1000% worth the safety of our citizens. I do also see the mention of delineation between the bike lanes and car lanes in this research, which is accompanied by many details explaining the benefits for both motorists and cyclists. As mentioned in previous public comments, I would love to see this safety feature continue on Madison, as its present state only exists on Hilliard. I’d ask that you consider this quick adjustment to the current street design as another way to show the city’s dedication to improving quality of life in Lakewood. Lastly, I’d urge the city to continue taking steps (whether through CASE or other means) to research other problematic intersections to continue our efforts in investing in its’ as well as our residents’ future. These changes are good for the whole of Lakewood and put people first. I appreciate your efforts and applaud your commitment to following through with your word on completing this study. Can’t wait to see what comes next.

I support this study to help implement curb bump outs, pedestrian light priority and other infrastructure that make it safer for pedestrians, bike commuters, handicapped, micro mobility users. These changes are much needed to help prevent what happened to Bill Stafos and others, once implemented these people first street designs need to be implemented city wide to keep people safe from an injust early death by automobiles. Machines can be replaced, people cannot.

I live on Carabel and would like to thank the City and the Planning Department for this thoughtful and thorough report. I strongly support the recommendations to implement a leading pedestrian interval and curb bump-outs. These measures would meaningfully improve safety for families like mine who frequently cross Madison and Hilliard as pedestrians.

I would also like to echo Emily’s comment regarding vehicles turning right from Carabel. I have personally witnessed several near-miss incidents caused by drivers mistakenly interpreting the “right turn only” signage to mean a right turn onto either Madison or Hilliard. Clarifying this movement and improving intersection design would help reduce confusion and improve safety for everyone.

I strongly support the Madison Avenue / Hilliard Boulevard safety analysis and appreciate the thoughtful, data-driven recommendations included in the report.
As someone who regularly uses this intersection as both a pedestrian and a cyclist, I can attest that the current design does not adequately support safe or comfortable travel outside of a motor vehicle. The proposed improvements—particularly curb bump-outs, leading pedestrian intervals (LPIs), and protected-only left turns—address long-standing safety concerns experienced here daily.
Curb bump-outs would shorten crossing distances and improve visibility. Leading pedestrian intervals would give pedestrians a critical head start into the crosswalk, increasing visibility and reducing conflicts with turning vehicles. Protected-only left turns would significantly reduce dangerous turning movements that put pedestrians and cyclists at risk.
These are proven safety treatments that prioritize predictability and reduce conflict for all users. For those of us who walk or bike through this intersection regularly, these changes are overdue. I strongly encourage the City to move forward with the recommended improvements.
An additional concern is the way Carabel Avenue dead-ends into Madison. Although signage indicates a “right turn only to Madison,” the intersection geometry is unclear, particularly for drivers unfamiliar with the area. I have frequently observed drivers from Carabel attempting to proceed straight across Madison to reach Hilliard. This creates serious conflicts with vehicles using the protected left-turn phase and has resulted in many near-misses. I encourage the City to explore additional design or traffic control measures that more clearly communicate permitted movements and prevent these conflicts.
