25. RESOLUTION 2021-07 – A RESOLUTION to take effect immediately provided it receives the vote of at least two thirds of the members of Council, or otherwise to take effect at the earliest period allowed by law, condemning the violent and unlawful behavior of rioters at the United States Capitol on January 6th, 2021 ; and urging local, state and federal entities to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law and bring to justice to those who incited, planned, organized, and conducted the Capitol rioting; and rebuking those elected officials who incited and misled the public with false claims of election fraud or seditious attempts to usurp the will of the voters; and calling on the United States Senate to convict and disqualify outgoing President Donald J. Trump from holding any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States.
Thank you Lakewood City Council for passing this resolution.
Unless Council has passed a Resolution urging other political entities to bring to justice the people that have been rioting across the country most of 2020, this seems hypocritical.
Unless Council has passed a Resolution rebuking elected officials that mislead the public with false claims of election fraud in 2016, this seems hypocritical.
Unless Council has seen evidence that President Trump demanded, instructed or encouraged the people illegally entering the Capital it seems both UnAmerican and seditious to call on the Senate to convict President Trump.
Thank you, Charlie Hargrave
All insurrectionists must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and Donald Trump must be summarily disqualified from seeking public office, or any position in the public trust, ever again. His unlawful actions, and those of his followers, must be publicly denounced in a bipartisan way at all levels of government. As a constituent, I urge my duly elected officials to honor and defend my vote be taking the aforementioned actions.
I am in full support of this resolution and implore Council to unanimously support Democracy and its people and vote for this resolution. Additionally, I strongly encourage and support actions taken by Council on behalf of its Citizens to encourage prosecution of those that participated in the attempt to thwart American Democracy.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community who has examined the history of fascist movements, I am especially worried for my safety after witnessing the armed insurrection on January 6 by white supremacists, conspiracy theorists, and Christian nationalists at the US Capitol . Our society's descent into authoritarianism for me means that I expect persecution in the future for being who I am. We have seen this before in Nazi Germany wherein 100,000 homosexuals were killed in concentration camps after the fall of German democracy, and in modern day Russia where LGBTQ+ people are targeted by vigilantes or unlawfully imprisoned by regional governments.
Please stand up for democracy, the truth, and the rule of law, and against violence and fascism before it's too late. Please hold Donald Trump accountable for his incitement of armed insurrection on January 6 and encourage other public officials to take the events on 1/6 as seriously as you do so we can begin to unify and heal our democracy.
I am writing in support of the resolution to condemn the seditious acts that occurred in the Capitol Building on January 6th, to encourage authorities to bring to justice all who were involved, and to rebuke elected officials who incited the riots and used their public platform to question the free and fair election that took place on November 3, 2020. My vote and that of every US Citizen is sacred, and our elected officials swear an oath to protect our democracy. Any elected official who attacks our elections and spurs a violent mob to attack our government should be impeached, barred for life from holding public office, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Our nation and its citizens deserve and demand a high standard of citizenship and behavior from our elected officials. Only when this decay is eradicated and perpetrators are brought to justice can our country heal and move forward.
At this time in American history, our country needs to unite to heal. In the same way we came together as a country to resist the terrorists after 9/11, we need to coalesce as citizens to disavow the terrorists who attacked our Capitol on January 6th. I support this resolution as a first step in letting these terrorists who were bent on destroying our republic as it stands know that we will not give in to their demands.
