3. ORDINANCE 23-2022 - AN ORDINANCE to take effect January 1, 2023 amending Section 905.13, Disorderly Conduct; Intoxication, and Section 502.01, Indoor Air Pollution, of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Lakewood to for the purpose of prohibiting smoking and vaping in the City’s parks. (1st read & referred to HHS 7/18/22; 2nd reading 9/6/22)
Please pass the ordinance to ban smoking, but most of all, please enforce it, especially in regards to marijuana use! I am at Lakewood Park usually 5+ times a week, and I can’t tell you how many times my young children and I walk past plumes of marijuana smoke, frequently right next to the playground or by the skate park. It makes me not want to take my kids there. The parks exist for everyone to enjoy fresh air. Please make sure we can!
I oppose this ordinance. I find it to be exclusionary. Lower income individuals have higher levels of smoking. Lower income individuals also benefit the most from public parks. This policy will not reduce smoking rates, but merely tell those who have this vice, that they are not welcome in the parks of Lakewood. Councilman Rader stated at the HHS meeting, that the Metroparks also bans smoking. This is incorrect, they only ban smoking at the Zoo. Please, do not pass this exclusionary policy.
